Key tasks to undertake
 |
Cut back perennials that have flowered to encourage a
second flush. |
 |
Still time to take cuttings of shrubs, particularly
take cuttings of short lived shrubs that you wish to replace. |
 |
Spray potato crops to guard against potato blight, this
is particularly important in wet and humid weather. Also keep an eye out for
other pests and diseases in the flower and vegetable garden and take
appropriate action. |
 |
Apply fertilizer in small amounts to the flower and
vegetable garden. |
 |
Summer prune fruit trees. |
 |
Prune shrubs that have finished flowering like Wegelas,
Deutzias and Mock Orange. |
 |
Keep boarders free from weeds by using a hoe. |
 |
Remove the runners of Strawberry plants if the are not
required, pinch out the top of out door tomatoes at 4 trusses and snap off
side shoots. |
My tips for the month
 |
Keep an eye on trees and shrubs you have planted within
the last 9 months, give them a good soak when the soil starts to dry out. |
 |
Also inspect ties on shrubs, make sure they are not
constricting growth and slacken any that look to tight. |
 |
This month there should be more time to enjoy the
garden, one of the advantages of getting on top of the work in the winter
and spring is that it will give you more time now to reap your rewards. |
 |
Scents of flowers are at their strongest after the sun
has gone down, this is a good time to walk around the garden and appreciate
them. |
 |
Take notice of weather forecasts, apply fertilizer
(particularly to the lawn) just before rain, spray plants when there is no
likelihood of rain to wash your spray off. |
 |
Keep controlling weeds which if left unchecked will
suffocate plants, rob the soil of plant food and encourage the presence of
pests and diseases. |
