Gardens that suffer from extreme exposure present some of the most difficult conditions. The secret to success is to create shelter by planting effective windbreaks on the perimeter, thus the range of plants that can be grown within the garden is so much greater. In fact the choice of plants when the shelter is established is about the same as in a more naturally sheltered spot. If you have an exposed garden your first priority should be to alleviate the full force of the wind chill. This may also be achieved by installing artificial windbreaks and by erecting individual protection around each plant like plastic tree shelters. Once plants have established the artificial shelters can be removed.
